This is my permanent Kay Faraday open post. Spam me with prompts, picture prompts, AUs, and the like. Indicate canon point or universe when necessary. Please note that I don't do slash, smut, anything sexual or anything overly and excessively violent.

You...you should see it, Gummy! I thought he was freaking out or something but then...

[Kay had been laughing along with Gumshoe; his laughter was infectious and he seemed to have forgotten that he was in trouble. Either that, or maybe now he's out of trouble.

She watches Edgeworth let go of the dolphin and swim over to her as her laughter is reduced to giggles, although there are tears in her eyes from laughing. Thankfully the rock is big enough for both of them to sit - and small enough that Kay doesn't have to exert a lot of effort if she wants to push him back into the water.

It's that thought that keeps her smiling despite his stare. At least the giggles are gone, and since the other line has gone quiet, Gumshoe has heard Edgeworth loud and clear.

She offers him the waterproof cellphone and has to stifle another giggle when she looks at him. Come on, it's almost comical, how serious he looks while dripping wet and after his fun dolphin ride.]

[Honestly, Edgeworth has no idea how absurd his extremes of seriousness can get.

In any case, the prosecutor is quick to take the offered cellphone and begin speaking to Gumshoe.]

Aren't you supposed to be on duty, Detective?

...

The dolphin was the nearest object on the surface, nothing more. I couldn't risk sinking while I was catching my breath.

...

Absolutely not, Detective! If you breathe a single word of this to anyone, it is your salary which runs the risk of drowning. Do I make myself clear?!

...

...Very good. Now, return to your work.

[Don't mind Edgeworth as he hangs up your phone for you, Kay.]

[Kay was going to hang up herself anyway after Gumshoe got to talk to Edgeworth, so she doesn't mind.

She turns to the prosecutor with a cheerful smile, but on the bright side, she's not giggling anymore.]

So, how was your trip through the Faraday Cave?

[truthsnomiracle]

I hardly had time to reflect on the experience, Kay. You know full well that a human can only hold his or her breath for so long.

[That's true enough, isn't it?]

[yatagarasu]

You can reflect now. And y'know, I think the dolphins like you.

[She nods toward a couple of dolphins swimming closer to them, more precisely to Edgeworth's side of the rock.]

Getting to this side was the sole thing I was trying to focus on. Hurrying through a dark tunnel while resisting one's instincts is not a pleasant experience.

[...Well, all that's technically true...]

[yatagarasu]

But you did it, and I was right - you didn't need the ring!

[For some reason Kay looks immensely proud of that. Almost as if she's praising him more instead of the fact that she's correct.]

[truthsnomiracle]

Nrrrgh...

(Blast! I can't refute that without exposing one of my weaknesses!)

...I concede that I technically made it into this place without it.

[...That admission is slow, pained, and said through gritted teeth.]

[yatagarasu]

[Kay notices the unease in his expression and how he says it.]

...What's wrong? Are you okay? [She was probably wrong in assuming Edgeworth was done freaking out by the time the dolphin gave him a thrill ride.]

[truthsnomiracle]

Wh— o-of course I'm fine!

[...That protest was just a bit too loud.]

[yatagarasu]

[It's so loud that even the dolphins look a bit surprised. Kay looks slightly shaken. That was...unexpected.

Normally Kay would respond by mimicking his objecting, but this seemed like an inopportune time for joking. She raises a tentative hand.]

Uh...you don't sound fine to me. C'mon, we're the only two people here, no one else'd know.

And yes, I know it's technically one human and one mermaid, okay?

[truthsnomiracle]

What point would there be in sharing — so you could laugh?!

[yatagarasu]

[She gapes at him in disbelief.]

What? No! [Kay stops herself, and sighs, running a hand through her bangs. She raises both hands and adopts a calmer, more serious tone.] I promise I won't laugh.

[truthsnomiracle]

Hmph. I don't see why anyone wouldn't laugh at the weak prosecutor who can't withstand stale air in his lungs!

[Kay is quiet and goggles at him after that. She raises her eyebrows, and her voice is small, almost timid.]

...That's it?

[yatagarasu]

[Maybe she doesn't have as big a vocabulary as Edgeworth does, but she perfectly understood his point.

Her expression changes into one of disbelief. She lifts her tail out of the water, and it changes into two legs. This time, she's wearing white shorts. Then she draws her knees up to her chest, hugging them.]

If your problem is holding your breath, do you know how many other humans have that same problem? A lot!

That doesn't make you weak at all!

[truthsnomiracle]

[Not that he used a lot of big or obscure words here, mind you.]

Unfounded levels of fear only serve to get in my way.

[yatagarasu]

[Okay, well, she doesn't have the same way with words as he does, but anyway.

Kay glances skyward briefly and looks at him.]

You sell yourself way too short, Mr. Edgeworth! That's not what I expected to hear from someone who jumped off a ship to capture a mer-thief!

[truthsnomiracle]

I did what had to be done in that moment, nothing more. If I hadn't intervened, the losses would have been staggering!

[yatagarasu]

But you did it, and that's what matters! And that's proof that you're not weak!

[She pinches the top of the bridge of her nose, a little frustrated with how he really is selling himself short. Kay has a feeling those "losses" include her.]

If anything really got in your way that night, you would have stayed high and dry!

[truthsnomiracle]

I am familiar with swimming, Kay. The thought of suffocation didn't even cross my mind until the midst of that miscommunication about the ring.

[Yes, he said "suffocation", not "drowning".]

[yatagarasu]

[Kay feels a pang of guilt when the miscommunication is mentioned. She half-hides her face in her knees, now that she is aware of one of Edgeworth's fears.

But she lifts her head again to look at him.]

Don't you mean dr - oh. [She gets it. He doesn't like not being able to breathe in general. Kay didn't expect his visit to turn out like this.] Ohhh. But it still doesn't mean you're weak!

[truthsnomiracle]

[The fact that his mentioning that mistake seemed to hurt Kay doesn't escape Edgeworth. And he would very much like to move the subject away from his own frailties, even if Kay insists this is somehow not one.]

Hmph. Either way, we came here to discuss things I ought to know going forward, not errors born of secrecy in the past, did we not?

[As much as Kay would like to help Edgeworth with his little problem, they did have important business. That's why they were here. Maybe if they had time afterward…

In any case, Kay nods slowly. She brings her knees away from her chest and lets her legs dangle into the water. Her legs become a blue tail again.]

Right. The stuff is in the cave on the shore, [She points to the sand.] but I have a few things under the lagoon.

[They may just. Edgeworth did schedule an entire day for this, after all. The question is how comfortable he would be with the idea of accepting someone else's help with this problem. He is suddenly clearly a lot more comfortable now that the subject is on laying the groundwork for the future pursuit of truth, after all.]
