[She stares into her cup.]

Worst case scenario - I'm not around, and neither are my trinkets!

Why are you simply reiterating why I need to overcome this as though this constituted a reason why I oughtn't make the attempt to do so alone?!

[yatagarasu]

[Kay stares at him...then suddenly:]

All right then, I won't loan you the ring on the way back! [She says this almost eagerly.]

[truthsnomiracle]

[It's a good thing that cup of iced tea is almost empty, or else Edgeworth's sudden jerk back in shock would have sent drops flying.]

Gmnugh?!

[yatagarasu]

Don't worry, I'll accompany you along the way. [Kay waves a hand dismissively.]

You did say you wanted to face it, that's a start. Unless you want to start with something smaller?

[truthsnomiracle]

Of course I know that!

[It just blindsided him for her to suddenly propose that, that's all.]

Admittedly, I had smaller steps in mind first, though, yes. Furthermore, I still fail to see see why you believe I must specifically put my weaknesses on further display for you!

[yatagarasu]

Because you gotta have someone who'll support you all the way and encourage you to push your limits! [It's a full-blown pep talk, with fist pumping.]

What kind of assistant would I be if I didn't assist you?

...Plus, since I already know, there's really no point in not "putting your weaknesses on further display".

And why, precisely, do I need that?

[...Actually a serious question.]

[She takes a deep breath, and lets out a weary sigh as if she has been explaining this to him over and over.]

Because, Mr. Edgeworth, you're gonna be tempted to slack off or cut corners or procrastinate, and you need someone to help you out when the going gets tough...and even show you how it's done!

[Kay punctuates that with a sip of her juice.]

[Edgeworth's face incrementally takes on more of a scowl with each different type of not doing the necessary work properly Kay lists.]

First of all, what sort of man do you take me for?!

[...One who's honestly afraid, Edgeworth.]

Second, can you really "show me how it's done" when you have no reason to fear such a thing yourself?

[Kay backs off a bit, scooting away from him while still on the blanket - that is not a pretty scowl.

She holds up a finger with her free hand.]

Number one, when people are afraid, they're more likely to put off actually facing their fears. [What branch of psychology did you learn that from, Kay?? In any case, she holds up a second finger.] Number two, I can change into a complete, 100% human. I've gone to and from my hideout a few times without cheating. [And by "cheating" she means, "turning into a mermaid halfway through".]

[truthsnomiracle]

And yet you do so in the full knowledge that should the need arise, you can change. Why would you have any reason to fear the worst?

[...As for her first point, he frankly can't effectively argue against it. He's struggled just to force himself to make one-floor trips in elevators, after all.]

[yatagarasu]

Mr. Edgeworth, you're forgetting that if we can invent things that can make a human's breath last for an hour underwater, we could make other things like that.

...Like anklets that can sort of "lock" your form so you can't change at all even if you wanted to. [Suddenly she's very serious at that last bit.]

[truthsnomiracle]

(She seems unusually serious even for the circumstances. Does she have a history with that particular sort of item?)

Do you mean to say that you ran your tests under such restrictions?

[yatagarasu]

Now that you mention it...no. [A sheepish grin. She reaches up to tug at her ponytail.]

I could try it out, if it'll make you less scared...

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth pauses to consider that briefly.]

No, I don't believe it would. We're both well aware that the trip can, in a practical sense, be made by a human. That intellectual understanding does nothing to help, however, and further evidence towards something already known to be true would most likely not change the matter.

[yatagarasu]

Sounds like we'll have to move on to the next step - chipping away at your fear until your only reaction to having to go through that tunnel again is, "Challenge accepted!"

[truthsnomiracle]

Aren't we here for another purpose entirely?

[Sip.]

[yatagarasu]

[Kay drains her cup and puts it down beside her. Then she stands up gingerly, making sure she doesn't upset the cup - even though it's empty.]

Oh, right...but we'll talk about this later, okay? [Does she sound like she cares? Well, she does.]

[truthsnomiracle]

Very well. After all, that too is important if I'm to be placed in charge of more cases that straddle the water line. The lack of a basic understanding of undersea culture and the inherent and technological capabilities of merpeople would cause more truths to be lost than a mere inability to cope with stale air could, however.

[During the final half of this long statement, Edgeworth pours himself another cup of tea, a full one this time.]

[She walks into the entrance of the cave, but remains in view. Then she suddenly turns to Edgeworth and tells him very cheerfully:]

Saving you in each and every case is gonna get pretty tiring, too!

[After a short laugh, Kay runs a hand along a ledge that has a few small, ornate boxes and some wooden statuettes. She selects two - that of a mermaid on a pedestal, and one of a man.]

Need I remind you that planning ahead would frequently preclude the need for me to be saved in the first place?

[As for Kay's choice of wooden statuettes, the prosecutor merely waits patiently for an explanation.]

"Frequently", but not always, if those mer-criminals are smart. Now that you're famous underwater as well as over water, you probably have a target on your back.

[So does Kay, but anyway, she walks back to the blanket and sits back down with a statuette in each hand. The mermaid is a beautiful one, with long wavy hair and an arm held aloft, while her opposite hand is at her chest. Her chest is covered by a garment made of seaweed, and her mouth is open in a silent song. The man, on the other hand, has a stoic expression and is dressed like a sailor. His hands are behind his back. Circumscribing their pedestals, close to the top, are grooves, showing that what's inside may be more important than the figures themselves.]

Anyway! You already know that my mom was a mermaid and my dad was completely human, and because of that, I can switch from being a mermaid or a human. You're thinking it's a great advantage, but being only half-mermaid isn't all that.

[Kay places the statuettes in front of Edgeworth.]

Full-blooded merpeople can play instruments to hypnotize people, but I can't. I always have to sing. I could play the flute for you right now and hope that you'll buy me that new issue of the Jammin' Ninja comic book when you hear me, but that's not gonna happen.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth merely nods grimly at the danger Kay cites. Honestly, it's not entirely new to him.

That little detail of the statuettes doesn't escape Edgeworth's notice, and it's clear from the way he looks at the daises briefly.]

Is there any particular advantage to playing an instrument for that purpose?
