truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth is holding his finger to his temple with a serious expression. (Serious thought)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-23 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Concerning food, I presume methods of fermenting meat are more common and diverse than they are above water since fire, while available, is less trivial to employ. (I wonder if any common undersea household items can be abused for criminal purposes that I wouldn't anticipate given my human memories...)
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth glances away, looking awkward and uncomfortable. (Um...)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-24 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
There are all manner of ordinary things I don't yet understand about our kind, to the point that it can prove difficult to stay entirely on topics that are best explored within the, er, time limit.

[Edgeworth pauses to look aside awkwardly.]

To say nothing of the fact that the, um, change is so thorough that it can be difficult to keep in mind that said time limit exists.
truthsnomiracle: (An unfortunate truth)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-24 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
This in particular, yes. As I was trying to imply, it would be best to shift to topics best explored as I am. However, the only questions immediately coming to mind are those related to the energy straining inside me and the song incessantly nagging in my head.
truthsnomiracle: (Glaring in fear's face)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-24 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
The most obvious question is from whence this song came. Not only have I never heard it before, but I'm hardly a composer in my own right. It... this is absurd, but... it feels as though it almost has a mind of its own, and is trying to... convince me of things.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth stares into the storm with a brooding, grim expression. (Grim)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-24 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is it normal for that song to be only loosely related to those passions? To believe strongly in a just and orderly world whose laws and workings are founded on the truth is one thing; to believe myself to be some sort of nobility with the right and responsibility to rule is quite another.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth points firmly at his opponent while shouting his point as special effects whoosh by! (OBJECTION!)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-31 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
OBJECTION!

[Thanks to the enhanced beauty of his voice and the potency of the emotion behind that shout, one could almost swear Edgeworth sang "objection" instead of shouting it as he points straight at Kay.]

To begin with, I've put a great deal of effort into learning emotional control in a general sense! After all, sentiment can easily get in the way of logic if one isn't careful. Indeed, if I lacked such skill I would have started singing again by now! Second, while I've long felt comfortable wielding authority, I've never lusted for more of it than I possess! Furthermore, the compulsion to use my song to rule others doesn't come paired with any compulsion to apply any specific values in doing so, when potentially applicable values are what I remember having felt strongly about and no drive to conquer others existed within me!

In addition, your own earlier testimony suggests that a change of species from human to merman should not have twisted my existing emotions into such an impulse to rule others! Specifically, you've stated that the various clans of merpeople have attitudes about humans which range from disdainful to neutral to friendly. If an impulse to rule others through song were normal among passionate merpeople, then why would those clans that think less of humans not simply enslave coastal populations?! After all, they would lack the respect for humans necessary to see any need to control such an impulse! For that matter, despite your later claims that it's normal for simple spikes in emotion to drive one to sing and that undersea society trains its youth to control such impulses, your own initial advice that I try singing simply because I felt like it suggests that at the absolute least, the degree to which my song gripped me took you by surprise!

truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth grits his teeth and rubs his temple in irritation. (Is logic truly this rare?)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-31 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Edgeworth sighs in frustration, rubbing his forehead. His maintenance of his position stops being the result of a steady wave of his tail and starts coming from periodic harsh flicks of it, causing him to bob in place slightly.]

Were this a courtroom, I would insist that you refrain from speculation in your testimony. Since it is not, however, I only ask that you make clear what is and is not a wild guess.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth points and occasionally waves his finger as he talks. (Making my case)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2014-12-31 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What aspects of song do they study aside from pathology?

[...Yes, Edgeworth's conclusion here is that there's something wrong with him and his song.]
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth crosses his arms and taps his finger on one of them. (Well?)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2015-01-01 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OBJECTION!

[Just as oddly resonant as before, though still apparently not carrying any of Edgeworth's temporary power.]

I find it hard to believe that anything like the choker would be deliberately designed with a flaw that's dangerous to those around the user. Furthermore, were this a common side-effect of such a choker's influence, would that not be a known factor with requisite warnings being at least rumored and ideally mandated by law? Instead, you've clearly never seen nor heard of such an effect before. Sickness or not, it strikes me as far more probable to be abnormal than not — and almost certainly so if any other human you've known has used it before without any such result.

Concerning that possibility, you've specifically referred to Detective Badd as someone who knows of merpeople, and I find it hard to believe that he would simply ignore the sorts of opportunities this would provide, even in the face of potentially dangerous side-effects. [Apparently, Edgeworth isn't even giving Kay a chance to deny others' use of transformation chokers before he establishes its likelihood.] Given the mechanics of reproduction and the limitations of the choker, it seems highly likely that your father used one of these at some point as well. Would neither of these people have warned you of any dangers associated with such an object?
truthsnomiracle: (Smug and arrogant)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2015-01-03 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
[It's been just over twelve minutes by now.]

Heh. Just because I know little of undersea life and am struggling with an unfamiliar impulse doesn't mean that my intellect is any less sharp.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth crosses his arms and taps his finger on one of them. (Well?)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2015-01-12 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
[That... seems to hit Edgeworth from left field, but it only takes a second for him to banish the confusion from his eyes, cross his arms, and look more like he's expecting an explanation from a recalcitrant witness.]

How does this abnormal urge on my part have any positive bearing on our ability to go on "field trips"?
truthsnomiracle: (Contemplation)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2015-01-14 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Now that you mention it, I don't believe you've mentioned how long the choker's power lasts if one does not sing, how long one can go between uses, or what dangers might apply to a transition from one, er, enchanted method of undersea survival to another given what you've already said concerning the difficulty of using multiple artifacts at once. Half an hour seems insufficient for a round trip to an undersea city, let alone any business there.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth closes his eyes and sighs. (Sigh)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2015-01-14 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Edgeworth sighs again, this time more out of resignation. His paddling to stay in place eases somewhat in the process, causing him to sink several inches before he swims back up to where he was prior to sighing.]

It does seem as though at this rate, such a skill would be necessary. However, given that our existence has remained secret for so long, I'm left to wonder how often human divers are... sung to.

[It has hardly slipped Edgeworth's mind that the only reason discovery of the jewel thief had even posed a problem in the first place was the amnesia clause of the song she used, after all... and it still disturbs him that merpeople can simply destroy knowledge like that.]
