[Edgeworth writes all of this down, taking marginally longer than usual since he's recording her exact words rather than shortening anything.]

(So my impression was correct — it does involve a complex interplay of factors. I should press her for more details about those factors.)

Concerning the combined static you mentioned, you appeared blank a short time after I turned on the headphones, before I even had the chance to speak. I presume that was when you were drawn in by that combination. Can you describe the combination, its irresistibility, or anything else you began to experience at that moment?

(Hopefully thinking too much about it won't send her back into a trance. I do recall having noticed references to focusing on prior hypnotic experiences as a means of becoming hypnotized again in the notes...)

[Kay waits patiently for him to finish writing, watching the movement of his pen.]

That's right. Umm...it's like it was filling my ears. It was all I could hear... [Her voice trails off and she stares into space for a moment.]

So I listened to it. Maybe...if I heard anything else outside of it, I might've been distracted.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth's first instinct is to say, "Kay, wake up!", but he holds that back so as not to say her name too soon. Instead, he reaches out and shakes Kay by the shoulder.]

Stay alert! I need an objective report!

[She blinks, and straightens up.]

I am awake! And you got what I said, right?

[truthsnomiracle]

One moment. (Perhaps I was a little too concerned.)

[Edgeworth pauses to write down all that Kay said, then moves on in his questioning.]

As for your next point... you say that you might have been distracted if you'd heard something other than the combined static, but then you heard my voice. Did that constitute a distraction?

[A shake of the head.]

No. I was talking about...other sounds that I wouldn't normally hear through the headphones. Sounds from my surroundings. Your voice sounded like it belonged with the static. Like...it was right to listen to it too.

[truthsnomiracle]

Huh... [Edgeworth writes all this down too.] Was that the only thing different about my voice?

[yatagarasu]

It sounds...more soothing and more commanding. [Kay runs a hand through her bangs.] You sounded like you were sure that you were correct, and it was important that I listen to you.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth blinks at the mention of his voice sounding "soothing", but writes everything down faithfully nonetheless.]

Projecting confidence and authority is a key aspect of my work as a prosecutor, and that was part of what I was doing when I spoke into the system. You've heard me speaking in such a way before in court, have you not?

[...Not quite how she heard it, Edgeworth.]

[yatagarasu]

Yeah, but this is different. It's you talking in court magnified fifty times!

[Edgeworth was half expecting to hear her describe the difference in terms of a factor of magnification, but... not nearly that big of one.]

(That alone would be enough to make a puppet of anyone! Even a judge and the defense...)

[Edgeworth shudders, then returns his attention to writing down Kay's words. It's a struggle, however, as he fights off images of innocent people being sent to their deaths at his mistaken command.]

(I sincerely hope that this research is never applied to any sort of broadcast.)

Um... so, when I spoke of the balloon... how did you experience that? Several possibilities crossed my mind, but only your testimony can clarify the matter.

Well...obviously everything you said was correct, that's what I thought. Everything you said made sense. I never thought, "Hey, there aren't any balloons or ribbons in this room!"

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth looks oddly grim as he writes Kay's latest words down.]

So you didn't experience it as mere immersion in a known fantasy?

(It sounds as though belief is what I had power over through my amplified words.)

[yatagarasu]

I never thought of it as a fantasy. [Kay shrugs.]

It was the truth.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth looks deeply disturbed as he records this. He's speechless for a moment, then finally observes:]

...Apparently, so much so that even looking where the balloon ought to be did nothing to dissuade that belief.

(This should be banned, perhaps even destroyed, if it holds the power to make one disregard legitimate evidence or the lack thereof!)

I told you, your court powers were fifty times better. I just heard your voice...and I knew you couldn't say anything wrong.

[truthsnomiracle]

[...At least Edgeworth's not so creeped out that he can't keep taking dictation.]

(If not for the value of the testimony I'm gaining from the discussion of it, I would almost think that so-called "deepener" was redundant.)

And when that alleged balloon was released?

I felt free...once the ribbon was cut, and I trusted you before that, but after that...I felt like I could trust you with anything.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth manages to keep much of his dawning horror out of the way for his next question, though it remains wary:]

Free of what, precisely?

[yatagarasu]

Free of problems, doubts...anything that gets you down.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth appears uneasy and pensive as he writes.]

The look in your eyes at that moment was particularly striking. Despite your attentiveness, it was as though you had no glare of your own.

[yatagarasu]

[Kay blinks.]

Like...I can't glare? I dunno, why would I be glaring?

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth shakes his head.]

I don't believe you lacked the ability. There were moments as we progressed when faint glimmers of purpose seemed to return to you, though only when I supplied them.

[yatagarasu]

Oh... [Kay frowns in thought, trying to imagine how she might have looked.]

Like I said, why would I be glaring at you?
