This is my permanent Kay Faraday open post. Spam me with prompts, picture prompts, AUs, and the like. Indicate canon point or universe when necessary. Please note that I don't do slash, smut, anything sexual or anything overly and excessively violent.

You're right! It'd make sense for Mr. Erickson to look up Miss Gusse's contacts first since she's the one he wanted dead!

So, how did Mr. Erickson and Mr. Condon meet...?

They may not have ever met directly. Given that Mr. Erickson appears to have gone to the trouble of investigating Mr. Condon's web of contacts as well, there might well be one last intermediary — someone who saw to it that Mr. Condon would wear the headphones. This person might subsequently have given instructions through them, or Mr. Erickson might have done so himself.

On the other hand, this information may simply represent part of the effort needed for him to arrange to meet Mr. Condon directly. If he managed to manipulate the right person, that person might have been made to introduce the two of them. It's hard to say which of these scenarios is the truth just yet.

But if there was a middleman, wouldn't we have to find him - or her - too? We can't just say there was one without any proof.

Precisely. As things stand, we only have evidence to suggest that Mr. Erickson thought it important to learn who Mr. Condon knew. We don't know how he used this information, nor who among the people listed might be involved. Speaking with Mr. Condon again once we're finished here may be the simplest way to narrow down the possibilities.

D'you think we might find something about a middleman in the rest of the files?

We cannot know until we check.

[With that go-ahead given, Edgeworth returns his attention to looking through the various printed files in the drawers.]

Most of these folders are already about the technical stuff, though. One says "binaural" and another is "inductions"...I think there's one more I need to crack.

[Edgeworth doesn't look up from his own search, but the naming of the folders does strike him.]

What was the folder you found these text files in called?

If you're talking about the lists of contacts, the folder was called, "Subjects".

Huh. I wonder if all his hidden folders were named along a similar theme. Is there anything else to know about them which might help us decide which to look into next?

[Meanwhile, Edgeworth's leafing through physical folders comes to a pause as he looks at one in more detail.]

[Kay brings up the folders she just cracked.]

The secret folders were hidden in different places. The one called "binaural" was inside a folder with sound files, and the "inductions" folder was in another folder with video files.

...Aaaand I found "subjects" within a bunch of other text files. Dunno if that helps.

[Edgeworth pauses to think, then grins.]

Given that the "subjects" folder contained additional text files, and "binaural" suggests a specific sort of audio file and is a hidden subfolder in a folder of audio files, it seems likely that he kept his locked files sorted by type like the rest of his files. I suspect that within the "binaural" folder you'll find additional sound files, and within the "inductions" folder you'll find additional video files.

Do you think they're of his other guinea pigs? [Kay stares at the screen suspiciously.]

Or are we going to find more of Mr. Condon?

[Edgeworth stands and looks around the room again quickly.]

I don't see any video cameras here, so it seems improbable that the videos are of people — though not impossible, given that apparently even cellphones have video cameras on them these days.

[yatagarasu]

Sounds like we should watch these videos. Too bad I didn't bring popcorn.

[She moves the cursor over the video files, ready to click on one.]

[Unfortunately, each of the videos is individually encrypted and password-protected. Time to put more of those passwords Edgeworth found to use?

Meanwhile, Edgeworth kneels back down next to the drawer he has open.]

In the meantime, I've discovered various invoices for electronic parts Mr. Erickson obtained by mail order. It may prove necessary to establish that he created the headphones, in which case this might prove to be valuable evidence.

[Edgeworth takes out his organizer and pen again and scribbles some notes about the invoices.]

[And when Kay finds that out that her job is far from over, she grumbles.]

Geez, Mr. Erickson really isn't taking any chances...

We'd have to prove that those same electronic parts are in the headphones, though.

A simple comparison of the headphones, their schematics, and the contents of the invoices ought to suffice for that purpose. I'm confident that we have nothing to worry about.

[Edgeworth finishes taking notes about the invoices and their location, then continues looking through the drawer where he found them.]

[Kay types in some of the unused passwords, and...]

Aha! So that's what the other passwords were for!

There did seem to be a rather large number of them.

[And there are several more passwords whose associations haven't been found yet, either.]

[She wastes no time in cracking all the other video files, checking off the used passwords and noting what they were for.]

Okay, which videos do you want to watch first? Or, we could see if Mr. Erickson keeps a collection of cute cat videos...

Even if any animal videos he might possess were password-protected, I find it hard to believe they'd be relevant to the case.

[Edgeworth looks the filenames of the cracked files over.]

Nngh... unfortunately, the names aren't highly informative. Certainly none appear to reference other people.

But we could find out more about Mr. Erickson's hypnosis techniques from the videos...?

[Maybe? Or maybe one of them is a cat video in disguise?]

Perhaps. Given the apparent timeline of events prior to the current case, though, we should choose what to view based on the date. The embezzlement allegedly occurred three years ago and the invoices date to no earlier; I would expect little evidence to emerge from videos earlier than that.

[...A lot of the locked videos are from before then, if Kay looks. For that matter, there aren't any locked videos newer than a year old.]

Three years ago... [Kay scrolls down to scan the dates of the videos quickly, focusing only on the videos she just unlocked.]

Well, we can cross off a lot of these videos, 'cause they're from before three years ago. Hasn't he heard of an external hard drive?
