This is my permanent Kay Faraday open post. Spam me with prompts, picture prompts, AUs, and the like. Indicate canon point or universe when necessary. Please note that I don't do slash, smut, anything sexual or anything overly and excessively violent.

We'd have to prove that those same electronic parts are in the headphones, though.

A simple comparison of the headphones, their schematics, and the contents of the invoices ought to suffice for that purpose. I'm confident that we have nothing to worry about.

[Edgeworth finishes taking notes about the invoices and their location, then continues looking through the drawer where he found them.]

[Kay types in some of the unused passwords, and...]

Aha! So that's what the other passwords were for!

There did seem to be a rather large number of them.

[And there are several more passwords whose associations haven't been found yet, either.]

[She wastes no time in cracking all the other video files, checking off the used passwords and noting what they were for.]

Okay, which videos do you want to watch first? Or, we could see if Mr. Erickson keeps a collection of cute cat videos...

Even if any animal videos he might possess were password-protected, I find it hard to believe they'd be relevant to the case.

[Edgeworth looks the filenames of the cracked files over.]

Nngh... unfortunately, the names aren't highly informative. Certainly none appear to reference other people.

But we could find out more about Mr. Erickson's hypnosis techniques from the videos...?

[Maybe? Or maybe one of them is a cat video in disguise?]

Perhaps. Given the apparent timeline of events prior to the current case, though, we should choose what to view based on the date. The embezzlement allegedly occurred three years ago and the invoices date to no earlier; I would expect little evidence to emerge from videos earlier than that.

[...A lot of the locked videos are from before then, if Kay looks. For that matter, there aren't any locked videos newer than a year old.]

Three years ago... [Kay scrolls down to scan the dates of the videos quickly, focusing only on the videos she just unlocked.]

Well, we can cross off a lot of these videos, 'cause they're from before three years ago. Hasn't he heard of an external hard drive?

[Edgeworth shrugs.]

Perhaps he finds the internal hard drive to be sufficient for his needs.

[Heck, if Kay checks, it's far from shabby — 8 TB.]

It's not going to be sufficient for long if he keeps racking up these videos.

...Should we look at the sound files first, for now?

[truthsnomiracle]

I don't see why not.

[Edgeworth shrugs, then returns his attention to the drawers to allow Kay time to try passwords for the sound files in the "binaural" folder if necessary.

And it is, in fact, necessary.]

Are you absolutely sure you don't need to pick any locks? A lock is a sure sign something big's in there!

[Kay scans the paper with passwords, glossing over those she has used already.]

I've yet to try the drawers with the locks, and I'd prefer to use the keys if they're available.

[Edgeworth moves on to the second desk's lower drawers. These aren't filled with more files; instead, one is filled with a tangle of various wires and cables while the other contains a drawer organizer filled with various small electronic parts.]

Aw, but there's no thrill in that...

[She turns back to her work, and it isn't long until - ]

Okay, Mr. Edgeworth, I've cracked the sound files! Which ones should we listen to...or are we going to end up hypnotized when we listen to them?

I'm far more concerned with using the most legal means at my disposal for any action I must take than with "thrill".

[When Kay announces her success, Edgeworth stands and turns to her.]

That's entirely possible, though depending on the method used, certain files may be ineffective if not listened to through headphones — ordinary ones, that is.

So...should we try opening them anyway?

[Edgeworth considers this for a moment, then something seems to occur to him.]

I wonder... Kay, is there any form of long-term storage indicated in the headphones' schematics?

[Well, given that the specifications include what amounts to the innards of a small thumb drive, even if the headphones themselves can only read from it...]

Hmm, I remember something like that...

[Kay stands up from her place at the computer and hurriedly checks the headphones again. Then she grabs the schematics and scans them.]

...Hey! There is! It's small, though. [She holds up the diagram in front of him and points to it.]

[truthsnomiracle]

Then perhaps another possibility concerning how Mr. Erickson delivered his commands has been raised — one which would not require him to use the walkie-talkie, or indeed be anywhere near Mr. Condon, to issue his commands. These are obviously computerized devices to begin with, and computers can be reprogrammed. Perhaps the headphones could be reconfigured to play a file of his speech already modified as the walkie-talkie would alter it, rather than taking outside input as it's clearly configured to do now.

[Given that the headphones themselves have no means of writing to disk, however, that would require swapping that tiny solid-state drive out.]

So...he could've recorded his commands and then popped them into the headphones, basically?

It's a possibility, yes. After all, given that he was able to create a device that applies persuasiveness modifications to any voice that passes through it, it only follows that he could figure out other means by which to use the underlying principles.

Uh...do you need a guinea pig again to listen to the sound files...?

[truthsnomiracle]

Given that we don't know their contents, that could prove rather dangerous. I don't wish to cause you harm, nor be responsible for you harming anyone. If we wish to test that possibility, it would be safer to search the computer to see whether there is, in fact, such a means of modifying a voice clip on it, then have me record something to be altered. In that way, we can be certain that it will be safe to listen to.
