[Edgeworth is quick to let go himself and take a step backward before fishing his organizer and pen out of the usual inner blazer pocket. He's still a bit off-balance inwardly, but the relative normalcy of writing down his observations and Kay's statements concerning the Impel filter test so far helps him return to an even keel. Once he's done that, he quickly reviews Kay's statements about the first test.]

It's rather striking how sharply different the two tests were in their results. Aside from the fact that your outward reactions were remarkably different, you seemed unsettlingly undisturbed by what happened when we discussed it afterward. Only when I brought the absence of your name to your attention did I notice even a twinge of fear from you.

[Edgeworth shudders at the memory of just how casual and matter-of-fact Kay was when she referred to her experience of anything he'd said at that time as obviously true.]

You think it's time to search for whatever can hypnotize me like the first test did?

[She turns to regard the computer monitor.]

I think it's improbable that the computer alone could hypnotize you "like the first test did". There are most likely all manner of things intended to hypnotize a listener or viewer there, but only the apparent prototype headphones could do it precisely the same way given its unique inputs. Indeed, in addition to the oddly-oriented short antennae that I suspect might be intended to monitor the wearer's brainwaves, I suspect that the so-called "static" you heard was actually derived from the rushing of your own blood in your ears; otherwise, why would the headphones have small microphones inside them?

Rather than trying to hypnotize you by any means yet, however, I believe the proper next step would be to discuss... what you just went through, and to compare and contrast it with the first test. A third test can wait until we reach a fuller understanding of the second.

Hmm...you're right. We did find out stuff about what's in the headphones awhile ago, didn't we?

[Kay nods, leaning against the desk, looking more confident as she puts the previous suffering behind her.

(It may never cease to amaze me how quickly she can return to a smile. Though I must wonder how deep that smile actually runs... Anyway, first things first — I must verify that the proper test was run.)

How similar was my voice as put through the Impel filter to how my voice sounded through the hypnotic headphones?

[Kay thinks for a moment, a finger tapping against her cheek.]

It's...it's the same, but without the static that came with the headphones. I couldn't resist listening to your voice, but...but this time, I knew what you were doing. I could try not to listen...not like the last time where I just had to listen.

[Edgeworth again takes the time to take exact dictation before continuing with his questioning.]

Was that awareness the only thing different about the situation?

Yes, I think it was. [She nods.] Well, this time you also weren't telling me about balloons and plastic bags either, too.

Indeed, I shifted methodology because I wished to test the effectiveness of the filter alone. Anyway, my point is that you appeared to be thrust into an internal war the moment you heard the modified voice clip. ...I realize this may prove painful to dwell on, but please testify as to the nature of that struggle.

It was like a mental tug of war. [Her voice is soft and serious.] What you said...it was like it was trying to grip my mind, and I wanted to pull my mind away from it.

[Edgeworth nods grimly, writing all this down before commenting himself.]

Am I to understand, then, that your impression from the previous test of my necessarily being correct was absent here?

[She shakes her head.]

How difficult was that "mental tug of war" from your own perspective?

Hmm...pretty hard. [Kay straightens up from where she had been leaning against the desk.] Like if I let up even just a bit...if I don't concentrate hard enough, I might lose control.

(Strange... Is there any significance to the fact that she's begun speaking in the present tense about the matter, or did she simply misspeak?)

Eventually, you asked where the fun was in my proposal. ...I intentionally refrained from arguing further in its favor, so as not to bias the results of the experiment in either direction.

[No, there's nothing significant about her use of the present tense at all. You asked for a description, Edgeworth, and you got her description of what was happening at that very moment in the present tense.]

I think I would've continued fighting it, since it was not like the first hypnosis session.

[Edgeworth scribbles further in his organizer.]

Of that I have no doubt. I simply felt it important avoid tipping the scales. ...However, as your struggle wore on, other concerns became more immediate.

[She lowers her head, staring at her boots. Kay braces her hands against the desk again while still facing Edgeworth.]

...Anyway, I had to concentrate really hard on pushing away your words and on doing what I wanted instead of what you wanted. I had to give it all I had, and when I was finally free...it felt good to be free of it.
