This is my permanent Kay Faraday open post. Spam me with prompts, picture prompts, AUs, and the like. Indicate canon point or universe when necessary. Please note that I don't do slash, smut, anything sexual or anything overly and excessively violent.

(I believe you would make a far better reporter than a mathematician, but that's beside the point.)

For the moment, we should search this cabin further in the hope that we may find evidence of Mr. Erickson's involvement, either directly or through an accomplice. Certainly he has the motive; we're only legally allowed to search here at all because of that very motive combined with the decisive lack of one on the part of Mr. Condon.

Thus far, we've discovered something highly likely to have provided Mr. Erickson with half of the means as well. However, we need decisive proof that he either met with Mr. Condon or arranged for someone else to do so, and that either he or whatever accomplice he may have has access to the poison.

I'm on it!

[Kay gives him a snappy salute.]

Looks like we'll have to turn the rest of these desks upside-down!

Indeed, we haven't checked the drawers yet. For that matter, the computer may have files on it which would serve as evidence, or there may be evidence in one of the other rooms.

[There are doors to either side of the large, unused fireplace at the far end of the room, after all.]

[Kay looks at the drawers, and then at the other rooms, excitedly anticipating using a thief skill again.]

Is it lockpicking time again?

Only if a drawer proves to be locked and the key is nowhere to be found. As you might notice, only the two topmost drawers of each of the three desks even has a lock to begin with. Until and unless one proves to be locked, I would rather that you focus on searching the computer for any suspicious files.

[Because truth knows he doesn't know much about computer security beyond how to set a hidden flag. Helpful for those incriminating Steel Samurai-related files and folders, that.]

[She nods. A good jiggling around with a lockpick should loosen those babies up, but when Edgeworth mentions the computer, she promptly shifts her attention to it.]

You mean decisive evidence that ties Mr. Erickson to the case and proves that these hypnotism tricks were used on Mr. Condon?

[truthsnomiracle]

Precisely. Any sorts of "locks" that might exist there, I doubt we would find or recognize the proper "key" for so readily.

[And with that task assigned to Kay, Edgeworth starts looking through the bottom drawers of the second desk.]

[Kay looks over the computer, quickly locates the power switch, and flicks it on. The screen comes alive...and needless to say, the first thing it asks for is a password.]

I'm guessing Mr. Erickson isn't the type to just use "password" as his password.

[She begins typing possible passwords into the space, but all of them are denied so far.]

[Edgeworth leafs through various folders in a large drawer, seeing if anything stands out as potentially relevant or incriminating.]

I would imagine not, no. However, terms from the various papers here might serve as additional low-hanging fruit.

[yatagarasu]

[She nods and keeps typing.]

"Noskcire" doesn't work...or "revenge"...or "hypnotist"...and what if he actually added numbers at the end?

[Edgeworth pauses to look at one folder briefly, but returns to flipping through more quickly.]

I don't suppose there's a specific minimum or maximum number of characters that applies in this case? At the very least, I've noticed such things specified on websites that call for passwords.

[After that comment, Edgeworth closes the drawer he was looking through and opens the opposite one on that desk.]

[Kay frowns, then holds down one key and glances at Edgeworth.]

It shouldn't be longer than 12 characters. I've never heard of one-character or two-character passwords, and three is also pretty short...

Huh. I've never encountered any situation in which one was allowed to have a password shorter than six characters.

[As Edgeworth keeps looking through the drawer he's currently on, he begins to look mildly annoyed.]

Nngh... perhaps all relevant printed material was already atop the desks. Why are so many people so poorly organized?

Yeah, six is usually the minimum. Not sure if - [Kay presses the enter key.] Oh, four is too short. [She hits it again.] So is five...and six.

Six to twelve characters! Maybe something that means a lot to him! His birthday? His favorite color?

If he is so dim-witted as to use such vital personal information as his password, I believe a few of the documents I've already seen in these drawers might be of use.

[Edgeworth opens the first drawer he was looking through, flips through folders a bit, then removes one in particular and hands it off to Kay.

And seriously, even Edgeworth knows better than that.]

[Kay takes the folder and opens it in front of her while typing.]

Does he have any personality quirks or something?

[truthsnomiracle]

We know a few things about him. He's been described as having seemed impatient with his work for Ms. Gusse's bank chain, Wealth Hatchery. That is most likely why he chose to embezzle funds from the institution rather than carefully saving up for the extensive electronics project he bought parts for — which I presume to be this very one.

[Edgeworth glances to the charger-seated headphones briefly.]

He's regarded in retrospect as having been manipulative, and people seem to regret having trusted him as easily as they did. He was in a subordinate position, yet others around him often felt like they owed him something and should help him in small ways regardless. It was never anything directly related to his embezzlement scheme, however.

[yatagarasu]

[Facepalm.]

My job just got harder.

D'you think he must have just written the password somewhere and kept it around in case he forgot?

I've yet to see anything of the sort, but I'll keep that in mind.

[Edgeworth goes back to looking through the files in the second of the two large drawers in desk #2.]

Can you give me the files you're done looking at? I'd like to look at them myself.

Do you mean the notes I was reading earlier, or the various files I'm searching now in the hope of discovering anything of relevance?

The ones you were reading earlier, since you aren't done with the ones you're reading now.

[Edgeworth stands, turns, and points out the thick binder of notes in question sitting on the same desk Kay is sitting at. Given the mess, it's no surprise that it's not easy to tell what's what at a glance.]

I was rather impressed by the thoroughness of his analysis of various claims concerning hypnosis.

Clearly he cared about his own research far more than he did about his job — to the point that he committed a crime simply to avoid dealing with the latter for very long, even if Ms. Gusse wrongly believed that humiliation alone would be punishment enough.

[Kay nods, and takes the binder in question, opening it and trying to prop it up against another stack of files so she can scan it while attempting more passwords.]

You can't blame a person if they're more passionate about something else, Mr. Edgeworth...but it'd be great if he were passionate about doing good with what he likes.
