[Rather than voicing any of this, however, Edgeworth continues searching through the drawer where he found the probable sheet of passwords, just in case anything else incriminating can be found within.]

[At least after that, Edgeworth will hear only the sound of typing, and then occasionally, the sound of a pen writing on paper as she cracks all these encrypted files and folders.

Kay plans on taking them down all at once before telling Edgeworth she's done.]

[The "subjects" folder's encrypted files are quite interesting indeed. One file appears to consist of various sets of notes concerning the speech patterns of various people, including Mr. Condon. Another, older file is a list of various people with contact information and their association with Ms. Gusse listed. A similar, newer file has also been compiled with a focus on Mr. Condon's contacts instead.

Meanwhile, Edgeworth reaches the back of the drawer he's looking through. Rather than disturbing Kay by moving past her to reach the drawer on her lower right in the first desk, he turns to focus his attention on the third desk's lower drawers instead to allow her more space.]

[After four quick tries, Kay manages to find the password for the subjects folder, and begins looking through the files, opening almost every single one she finds.]

Mr. Edgeworth, look! He was studying people's speech patterns!

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth stands and turns, then glares at the screen.]

Given that such information isn't normal to study yet can be used to enhance efforts at manipulation, that's certainly suspicious. Excellent work, Kay.

Well, you did find the passwords, so...

[Kay clears her throat, imitating Edgeworth's tone as best she can.]

Excellent work, Mr. Edgeworth.

Hmph. That was nothing more than a display of persistence. Anyone could have found them under the circumstances.

[yatagarasu]

But why isn't it normal to study how people talk? Don't other people do that...just not for hypnosis? [As she speaks, she opens the file with Mr. Condon's contacts.]

[truthsnomiracle]

Unfortunately, I can offer little better than a tautology as a response — most people simply see no need to do such a thing. Its presence is abnormal simply because of its widespread absence in the world at large. As such, we cannot decisively prove that this wasn't some mere quirk of Mr. Erickson's. It's circumstantial evidence at best, and can only be established to be so as part of the greater context of his work.

[The file with Mr. Condon's contacts contains about three dozen names with attendant contact information (or notes about unavailability of certain pieces of information) and listed relationship with Mr. Condon. About 60% of them are family members, but among those who aren't family, one name stands out: Goldie Gusse.]

You mean...maybe he had a degree in linguistics or something.

[Kay squints at the contacts. The names are unfamiliar to her...but Mr. Condon is definitely not unfamiliar, and somehow, all these people had links to him.

Including...ah!]

Hey, these are Mr. Condon's contacts, and everyone is somehow linked to him...but why is Miss Gusse in the list too?

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth glares at the screen again at Kay's words, then taps his head and smirks.]

Mr. Condon may have had no motive to kill Ms. Gusse, but they were acquainted. The crime scene was Ms. Gusse's own house, after all, and few people allow strangers over to eat with them. The more important questions to consider are twofold: why would a list of contacts for Mr. Condon be on Mr. Erickson's computer in the first place, and how precisely did he obtain this information?

...Do you think Mr. Erickson hypnotized it all out of Mr. Condon?

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth considers this for a moment.]

I don't think we yet have enough information to say. Perhaps further evidence concerning the matter is yet to be found.

[yatagarasu]

You mean I should start looking into the rest of these folders, right? Now that we know he's been keeping tabs on Mr. Condon and people close to him...and Miss Gusse, we have to tie everything together, don't we?

[truthsnomiracle]

Do you mean to say that there's a file of this sort for Ms. Gusse's contacts as well?

[Given that there is, and it's the older of the two lists...]

...Yes, there is! [Kay opens it up.] According to the date on this file, it's older. Mr. Erickson compiled those contacts before doing Mr. Condon's!

[truthsnomiracle]

I see...

[Edgeworth thinks for a moment, then smirks.]

The evidence thus far suggests the possibility that Mr. Condon was hypnotized into taking the actions he did through the use of the headphones. However, Ms. Gusse was the one Mr. Erickson had a grudge against; there's currently no evidence that Mr. Erickson saw Mr. Condon as anything more than a tool to be used. Given that, it's entirely possible that the files are dated as they are because Mr. Erickson only learned of Mr. Condon while investigating potential candidates for the role of unwitting assassin. Upon deciding on him, he then investigated indirect ways to reach his patsy-to-be.

You're right! It'd make sense for Mr. Erickson to look up Miss Gusse's contacts first since she's the one he wanted dead!

So, how did Mr. Erickson and Mr. Condon meet...?

[truthsnomiracle]

They may not have ever met directly. Given that Mr. Erickson appears to have gone to the trouble of investigating Mr. Condon's web of contacts as well, there might well be one last intermediary — someone who saw to it that Mr. Condon would wear the headphones. This person might subsequently have given instructions through them, or Mr. Erickson might have done so himself.

On the other hand, this information may simply represent part of the effort needed for him to arrange to meet Mr. Condon directly. If he managed to manipulate the right person, that person might have been made to introduce the two of them. It's hard to say which of these scenarios is the truth just yet.

But if there was a middleman, wouldn't we have to find him - or her - too? We can't just say there was one without any proof.

[truthsnomiracle]

Precisely. As things stand, we only have evidence to suggest that Mr. Erickson thought it important to learn who Mr. Condon knew. We don't know how he used this information, nor who among the people listed might be involved. Speaking with Mr. Condon again once we're finished here may be the simplest way to narrow down the possibilities.

[yatagarasu]

D'you think we might find something about a middleman in the rest of the files?

[truthsnomiracle]

We cannot know until we check.

[With that go-ahead given, Edgeworth returns his attention to looking through the various printed files in the drawers.]

Most of these folders are already about the technical stuff, though. One says "binaural" and another is "inductions"...I think there's one more I need to crack.
