[truthsnomiracle]

[Early in the investigation of Goldie Gusse's death by a poisoned glass of fruit punch, one Kain Condon turned himself in and confessed to the crime. However, his confession was abundantly strange; he claimed neither to have known the substance he used was poison nor where the vial came from in the first place. If his word was to be taken at face value, he simply took the vial from his own pocket and put its contents in the drink as soon as he was left alone in the room, an act which struck him as mundane at the time. Only upon reflection did the suspect begin to wonder when and where he got the vial and why it seemed like a good idea at the time to make use of it. He claimed to have been horrified when he realized that it was probably the poison that killed Ms. Gusse. The entire thing struck Edgeworth as too absurd to be a mere lie, but at the same time, it was also too far out there to easily work with. The prosecutor set out with his self-proclaimed assistants on the assumption that Mr. Condon was more likely to be an accomplice than the mastermind.

As the investigation wore on, several things became abundantly clear about the situation. First, all physical evidence speaks to the fact that the person who did the deed was in fact Mr. Condon, save one detail: there's no indication of where he could have acquired the poison. Second, despite his culpability, there's no end of testimony claiming that he has no motive, and no evidence contradicts this; there isn't even any indication that he might have been blackmailed into being someone's accomplice. Third, there is one person who would have a reason to want Goldie Gusse dead — Sven Erickson, who was fired from a promising career at Mrs. Gusse's bank chain three years ago for embezzling funds, apparently in order to purchase raw materials for some kind of advanced electronic device. Mrs. Gusse didn't press charges, apparently thinking that the loss of such a lucrative career and the stain on Mr. Erickson's reputation would be punishment enough.

Edgeworth has sent Gumshoe on a manhunt, hoping that the detective will be able to find Mr. Erickson and bring him in for questioning. Meanwhile, the prosecutor and Kay have tracked down the isolated cabin where Mr. Erickson has been working on whatever project he illegally diverted funds toward. Hopefully, some indication of whether or not this man was tied to the crime could be found here.

Unfortunately, the door is locked...]

Kay, I believe that for once, it is your turn.

[yatagarasu]

[Kay peers at the door and bends down a bit to closely examine the keyhole. Then she straightens up, tightens her gloves, and gives Edgeworth a thumbs up.]

Leave it to me! No door can stop a Great Thief! [She unclasps one of the small keys hanging from the large one in her hair and slips it through the keyhole. Then she begins jiggling it this way and that, an expression of thrill and anticipation on her face. After a lot of twisting, there is an audible click, and Kay takes the "key" out, grinning.]

[Edgeworth doesn't hesitate to bow in appreciation.]

[That subtle warning having been dished out, the prosecutor leads the way into the cabin.

The first room they find themselves in is rather large, seeming to take up half the cabin's area to judge by how large it looked on the outside. There are doors leading further in against the far wall — one to each side of the large and unused-looking fireplace. While the room has a window on each of the walls to either side, both of them have shades pulled down over them, hence the need for them to break in to begin with if they were going to have a chance to investigate despite the owner's absence.]

[Rather than being used as a living room as one might expect from the fireplace's presence, however, the room instead is dominated by three large desks arranged in a U. One has a computer monitor and speakers atop it; another a printer/scanner/copier, a sound mixing and analysis station, and a phone charger; and the third a strange-looking pair of heavy headphones and something resembling a walkie-talkie, both set in cobbled-together charging stations only barely covered enough to be safe. All three also have various papers and files strewn atop them. Between these three desks is a single office chair, though there's space enough for three of them.]

(It appears I was correct — this is Mr. Erickson's workshop. Now to see what we can learn, and whether his motive translates to a connection to this case.)

[Edgeworth begins by starting to look over the various files on the desk with the computer monitor and speakers.]

[Wow, don't discourage her, Edgeworth.

She steps inside after him while reattaching the small key - which is probably either a skeleton key or a lock pick - and stares at all the gadgetry and paperwork in wonder.]

Whoa, it's like mission control! Or a secret lab!

[yatagarasu]

[And with that, she excitedly strides over to the third desk, digs out the headphones, and places them over her ears. At least she doesn't turn them on or press anything. Then she clears her throat and says in what is supposed to pass for a mechanical voice:]

Raven Rogue to Samurai Ruffles, Raven Rogue to Samurai Ruffles, do you copy? Roger. Kssst! [That last sound was an attempt at static. Kay giggles.]

[Edgeworth looks up from his investigation and over his shoulder at Kay's shenanigans when she speaks.]

("Samurai Ruffles"? ...I'm honestly not sure what to think of that.)

Kay, I advise against playing with what could be evidence.

[...Kay doesn't hear a word of what Edgeworth says, however; apparently the headphones are well-designed to keep outside noises out, even when not in operation. As for what the wearer should hear... well, there are several short, thick antennae sticking out of the edges of the headband, pointing forward and back rather than upward, as well as a pair of longer ones sticking out at a more normal angle from each ear covering.]

[yatagarasu]

[Kay blinks. She saw Edgeworth's lips move and she's certain he's telling her off with that kind of face, but the headphones are blocking everything out. And we mean EVERYTHING. Her brow furrows in puzzlement, and her mouth opens to speak up before she decides to just take the headphones off.

As she reaches up to do so, her fingers find the antennae, and she blinks in surprise as she seeks better purchase on the headband, and finally takes the entire thing off.]

Boy, you couldn't hear a thing with those babies on!

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth turns to face Kay entirely at that comment.]

Nothing at all, huh... In that case, I'll repeat myself — playing with things that may turn out to be evidence is ill-advised. We do know that Mr. Erickson was working on some sort of electronic hardware, and for all we know those headphones could be it.

[yatagarasu]

I wasn't playing, I was...um, trying to lighten things up!

[After a brief petulant pout, she looks over the headphones curiously.]

That's weird. Headphones usually don't have antennae...unless they're part of a costume. [She blinks.] Maybe this is a different type!

[truthsnomiracle]

If it were merely the long pair on the ear coverings, I would think they were merely intended to pick up radio or other signals. It is the multiple short antennae sticking out sideways from the headband portion which seem particularly strange.

[yatagarasu]

Oh, right. Maybe these short ones are made to pick up something else?

[truthsnomiracle]

If so, then perhaps we'll find out somewhere within the papers strewn about. (Though I can't imagine what they could have been intended to receive...)

[That having been said, Edgeworth turns back around, towards the desk with the computer monitor and speakers.]

[yatagarasu]

...Like alien messages from out there?

[Kay puts down the headphones and reaches for the odd walkie-talkie next, placing it close to her ear like a phone.]

Mr. Erickson, do you copy? Over. Kssst. [A pause as she picks up one of the sheets of paper from the third desk and reads through it. Dissatisfied, she lets it fall back onto the table.]

OBJECTION! Even if one were to assume that such messages existed to be received in the first place, antennae meant for such purposes are generally pointed toward the sky and considerably larger!

[The papers on the third desk by and large appear to be schematics and technical papers. The latter are especially dense, but the former are mostly pictures punctuated by small textual notes.

As for the walkie-talkie, if it or its schematics are examined closely, it should grow clear that it doesn't actually have a speaker, only a microphone.]

Kay, we have an investigation to conduct! What did I just say about not playing with potential evidence?

[yatagarasu]

Hey, you never know what form alien communication is gonna take! [She puts down the walkie-talkie when Edgeworth tells her off, though.

Kay tries to look over the rest of the documents, then begins attempting to line them up on the desk to see if they form a puzzle or if they would make more sense juxtaposed that way. She scratches her head.]

Hmm...

[The technical papers on the desk don't seem to form any special pattern, but laying out the schematics makes it easier to piece together the big picture, at least in a metaphorical sense. There are some repeated numbers between pictures of the walkie-talkie-like device and the headphones — specifically between the antenna of the former and the larger, longer antennae on the sides of the latter. There's also some vague discussion of adjustment of sound frequencies in the earphones' output in reaction to input received from the small antennae, of the walkie-talkie performing analysis and processing of sound input prior to broadcast, and of automatic sound mixing occurring in the headphones immediately prior to output.

Meanwhile, Edgeworth uses the respite in Kay's goofing around to finally look through the papers on the first desk in some detail.]

(Curious... there's a great deal of information here about neurology, advanced sound mixing, and, of all things, hypnosis.)

[Kay tries to start from one end of the line, and as she goes, she begins to notice the pattern. It has a lot of big words, but if she can condense the info into more understandable chunks...

The headphones and the walkie-talkie are connected somehow. The walkie-talkie probably controlled what the person will hear on the headphones, but at the same time, something would happen in the headphones before the person could hear whatever came from the walkie-talkie.

Wait.

Kay grabs the walkie-talkie and realizes that it only has a speaker, but nowhere to place one's ear on. She turns it over in her hands and lifts it to her mouth as if about to speak into it, but thankfully she remains quiet.

That is, until - ]

Eureka!

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth is startled by Kay's outburst, but turns to face her at a normal speed and crosses his arms.]

And for what reason did you choose to steal that particular line, Kay?

[yatagarasu]

[Kay grins triumphantly and makes a sweeping gesture toward the papers on the third desk.]

I think I figured something out! The headphones and the walkie-talkie are connected! I mean...they do something together!

[truthsnomiracle]

Ah, do they? Excellent work, Kay. Given that the headphones don't appear to have a microphone attached, I presume this involves a one-way broadcast from the walkie-talkie to the headphones?

[yatagarasu]

Ding ding, we have a winner!

[She grabs some of the sheets of paper and shows them to Edgeworth, pointing to the numbers between the diagrams of the walkie-talkie and headphones.]

Whatever goes through the walkie-talkie will be heard by whoever's wearing the headphones, but...somehow, it changes. The sound frequencies change.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth takes a look at the papers himself, but a lot of this is Greek to him. The broadcasting and receiving of a particular frequency that Kay points out he can make some sense of with her direction, however.]

Huh. Do you have any idea how it changes or why?

[yatagarasu]

[She shakes her head, no longer as proud as she was before because her discovery just raised more questions.]

I dunno. Maybe it's a long-distance thing? But then you wouldn't need to mess up the frequencies...

Meanwhile, a preliminary look at the materials on the desk with the computer suggests one possibility concerning what the more unusual antennae on the headphones might be for. Given that much of what's there concerns neurology, it's possible that they're meant to pick up on the wearer's brainwaves. After all, the way they're positioned, they'd be close to the wearer's head.

[And the notes on the schematics do suggest that input from the small antennae is used in the headphones' sound alteration algorithms...]
